  • Happenings at Hillel

Despite the culmination of the spring semester, UW Hillel continues to expand its programming and resources to prepare for the future. The Barbara Hochberg Center for Jewish Student Life’s recent LEED Gold certification ensures that the facility’s legacy will be impactful and long lasting. LEED is the country’s premier program for the promotion of design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings. According to Executive Director Greg Steinberger, “A green building was an early requirement for our students. They led the charge for sustainability, and we were glad they did. The building is marvelous, and the cost savings substantial. We are honored to be LEED certified.” Hillel’s staff is pleased with the recognition and hopes that it will increase awareness regarding green and sustainable design practices on campus and throughout Madison.

Hillel’s staff and students have further evolved Hillel’s influence by creating a phone application that connects both incoming and existing students to Hillel with the swipe of a finger. Over the course of the school year, Development Associate Samuel Friedman, PhD ’11 and Israel Fellow Dan Landa have led efforts to develop UW Hillel Mobile. The duo worked alongside Israeli company Conduit to create features that are accessible via multiple platforms. They also engaged several students whose ideas have played an integral role in the app’s design. UW Hillel is the only Hillel that boasts its own application. Some of its most popular features among its 150 users include access to Hillel’s social media pages, a live photo album to which students can contribute, a calendar of events, and a gym tracker which provides up to date calculations of the number of people utilizing Hillel’s gym at any point during the day. Landa and Friedman will continue to develop the app with the hope of increasing its social features and functionality. Ultimately, they aim to include one tap registration and donation features as well as access to games and newsletters. Version 1.0 of UW Hillel mobile is currently available to iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows phone users.

UW Hillel is also pleased to announce that it is the proud recipient of the Goodman Foundation Grant. The grant will enable Hillel to hire a Director of Hospitality and will also facilitate the acquisition of both new and updated equipment around Hillel. By expanding Hillel’s capacity to host large events, the grant will promote Hillel’s presence in Madison and increase the public’s access to its facility. Hillel’s staff looks forward to new opportunities to make the Barbara Hochberg Center for Jewish Student Life’s a visible presence throughout the community.

This upcoming school year, students will enjoy additional opportunities for leadership and coalition building. The Ask Big Questions Fellowship enables five students to lead a coordinated effort to bring diverse groups of people together and lead discussions. The group is responsible for bringing together individuals of different backgrounds and perspectives in an effort to increase interactions, deepen interest in exploring important questions, and inspire activism. The ABQ Fellows will work alongside staff members and faculty advisors to promote their campaign throughout campus. The students will work together to devise strategies for social media campaigns as well as events and community engagement. As part of a national campaign among college students, the ABQ Fellows will receive extensive training at Hillel’s Engagement Institute. The participants will also further their leadership skills by serving on the Hillel leadership Board and attending training sessions as well as student leadership meetings.

UW Hillel along with its staff and students has enjoyed an immensely successful school year. Several programs are already in the works for next fall, and the pending arrival of the class of 2016 marks an exciting time in the programming process. • Hillel Combines Service with Observance

This year, Lag Ba’omer begins at sundown on May 9th and continues through the night of the 10th. The Torah states that we are obligated to observe the Counting of the Omer between Pesach and Shavuot in order to remember the connection between the two holidays: redemption from slavery remains incomplete without the receipt of the Torah. The Counting lasts seven weeks, or approximately 50 days. About half of that time is considered to be a period of mourning during which haircuts are forbidden. However, on Lag Ba’omer, the 33rd day, the mourning comes to an end and we are permitted to cut our hair once more.

In an effort to celebrate Lag Ba’omer and raise awareness for an inspiring project, UW Hillel will host Cut for a Cause, an event that supports Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Pantene’s campaign provides wigs made from donated hair to women who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatments. Throughout the day, five Aveda stylists will be on hand in the Hillel lobby to help donors make the cut. Donations must be at least eight inches long; free of permanent color, bleach, or chemical treatments; and cannot be more than 5% gray.

The event is open to all students, faculty members, and members of the community. Time slots will be available throughout the day, and you can sign up here. Hillel hopes to recruit 15 donors; however, if you do not meet the qualifications to donate your hair, you are still welcome to participate in the event. Hillel is looking for volunteers to help set up and manage logistics, check donors in, and take photos of donors. Please contact Hannah Blake and Sarah Dicker

with questions about donating or volunteering.

  • Ask Big Questions Fellowship

Each year, UW Hillel offers a variety of leadership positions to students in an effort to facilitate professional development as well as connections to the Jewish and larger campus community. The Ask Big Questions Campaign is one of the latest leadership opportunities available to students. The campaign represents a coordinated effort to bring diverse groups of people together to discuss and address pressing contemporary issues.

UW students are invited to apply to the Ask Big Questions Fellowship for the 2012-2013 academic year. Five student fellows will work alongside staff members and faculty advisors to promote and coordinate the campaign on campus. They will be responsible for bringing together individuals of different backgrounds and perspectives in an effort to increase interactions, deepen interest in exploring important questions, and inspire activism.

The Ask Big Questions Fellowship is a national effort among college students to promote peer-to-peer interactions and civil discourse on campuses around the country. Fellows are trained in dialogue facilitation as well as the strategic implementation of social media campaigns to promote sustained interactions. They are required to hold at least five Ask Big Questions group conversations over the course of the academic year. They will also work together to plan events and campaigns that engage the UW community.

The five fellows will participate in intensive training sessions at Hillel’s Engagement Institute from August 8-10. Upon their return to campus, the ABQ Fellows will serve on the UW Hillel leadership board and attend UW Hillel training sessions, weekly meetings, and monthly student leadership meetings. UW Hillel looks forward to this exciting opportunity for further engagement and leadership. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm on Monday, May 7th. If you are interested in applying or have any questions, please contact Ilana

  • Challah Street Block Party

UW Hillel’s Challah for Hunger chapter will host its second annual Challah Street Block Party on May 3rd from 6:00-8:00 pm. The event will take place on Hillel’s patio and will feature music, grilled cheese sandwiches, French toast, and eight different flavors of challah. All of the proceeds will be divided between Porchlight, a local non-profit organization that provides shelter, food, counseling, and transitional housing to Madison’s homeless population, and the American Jewish World Service, which works to combat hunger in Sudan.

According to Challah for Hunger Intern Alex Vojdany, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the severity of hunger around the world. Participants will be photographed holding posters listing facts about hunger. These photos will then be posted on the group’s Facebook page in an effort to raise awareness about Challah for Hunger’s cause.

Vojdany and the rest of the Challah for Hunger interns and volunteers hope that the combination of food, music, and the activity will encourage people to “mingle, socialize, contribute, and learn.” The group is looking for volunteers to help mix, braid, and bake on Wednesday and Thursday. There is no limit to the number of people who can volunteer. If you are interested, please contact Jonathan.
