How many Jewish students are there on campus? What is Jewish life like here at the University of Wisconsin?
There are approximately 5000 Jewish students at the University of Wisconsin, about 10% of the campus population. Jewish students are an active, dynamic part of both Hillel and the campus community. They are motivated, diverse and energetic. There exist many opportunities for a student to become involved with Jewish life - from cultural arts to Israel advocacy to social justice to religious life.
How do students get involved with Hillel? Are there membership fees?
Any student on campus is welcome to participate in Hillel sponsored events. There are no membership fees and students are encouraged to attend as many programs and activities as they would like. Programs are supported by donations from parents, alumni, and the Jewish community. Students can also get involved by planning a program or activity.
How connected is the Hillel to the University community?
Hillel is integrated into the University community through its dynamic programs, co-sponsorship of events, and the involvement of active students in many other University groups. The University is very supportive of Hillel and its role on campus and works hard to provide a welcoming atmosphere for Jewish students, faculty, and families.
What kind of student programs and organizations does the UW Hillel sponsor on campus?
The UW Hillel is home to over 30 independent student organizations reflecting the gamut of Jewish life at the UW. What kind of Shabbat program is available at the UW Hillel?
Every Friday night during the academic year UW Hillel hosts three student-led services (Reform, Conservative and Orthodox) - nearly 150 students attend services each week. Immediately following services, Hillel offers a FREE fabulous meal. Several times a semester, we host faculty and other guests to visit with students or lead an informal discussion. Is there a Kosher Meal Plan on Campus?
Yes, the UW Hillel offers a full kosher meals (Lunch/Dinner) and holiday meals throughout the year. At Passover, Hillel offers lunch and dinner every day. Students can purchase a single meal or a meal plan for the semester, year, or a punch card. Click here fore more informaton on the kosher dining.
What is the Center for Jewish Studies and the Hebrew program like at the University of Wisconsin?
Both programs are terrific. The Center for Jewish Studies as well as the Hebrew and Semetic Studies are well regarded. The faculty are dynamic and respected and classes are often filled to capacity. Students rave about the classes in both departments.
