Let an Alternative Break Take You Places!
 |
Hillel’s Alternative Break trips offer you the opportunity to give back to the global community, while making amazing connections with other UW students. Hillel’s trips are designed to be an immersive experience - giving you a taste of what it’s like to live on a Native American reservation in South Dakota, roll up your sleeves and help a community in need by volunteering in Los Angeles, work on a sustainable agriculture project on an organic farm, or experience the amazing culture of Brazil

Participants return home as advocates for the Jewish community they visited, ready to mobilize their friends, families, and communities to help. JDC Short-Term Service Programs are currently taking place in Argentina, Ukraine, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Rwanda, and other locations.

Agahozo Shalom Youth Village
March 12-20, 2011 -- Spring Break
Rwanda
The Agahozo Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) aims to create a safe and structured residential community for
orphaned children in Rwanda. The village will be a place of hope, where traumatized youth can "dry their tears" (Agahozo) and "live in peace" (Shalom).
Within this caring environment, the rhythm of life will be restored, so that youth who have been through great trauma will find a home and a community, as well as a place to learn and become leaders for tomorrow. The youth who come to live and learn in the ASYV will grow into healthy adults who are not only able to care for themselves and their families, but who are also committed to making their community, their country, and indeed the world a better place.
A unique and ambitious project, the ASYV will serve as a model for caring for the disrupted lives of youth across Rwanda, Africa, and beyond, to wherever there are traumatized youth who need a place to call home
Our 10-day service learning trip provides groups with an opportunity to participate in village life and learn about the history and culture of Rwanda while engaging in meaningful and impactful service work.

| Tzedek Means Justice
Weinberg Tzedek Hillel seeks to pursue justice and transform communities. Weinberg Tzedek Hillel, an international public service effort sponsored by Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, is dedicated to transforming life on campus and in the community.
Framed by the Jewish imperatives of tzedakah (righteousness), gemilut chasadim (acts of loving kindness), and tikkun olam (repair of the world), Weinberg Tzedek Hillel engages and empowers students in meaningful public service and encourages creative thinking when addressing social justice issues. In the process of bringing about meaningful social change, participants grow intellectually and spiritually.
