Hanukkah Blessings

Hanukkah is about triumphing when the odds are stacked against us and celebrating light in the dark. In 165 BCE, the Greek king, Antiochus, outlawed Jewish practice and defiled the Temple in Jerusalem. A small army of Jews lead by Mattathias and his son Judah, known as the Maccabees, rebelled against this religious persecution. They regained control over the Temple and built a new altar so they could once again offer sacrifices. It is said that in the rededication of the Temple, only a small amount of oil was found to light the menorah, but it ended up lasting for eight days. On Hanukkah, we not only celebrate the miracle of the oil, we also remember the Maccabee's persistence in the face of assimilation and persecution.

How about a Hanukkah Song?

Ma'oz Tzur מָעוֹז צוּר
00:00 / 00:53

Ma'oz tzur yeshu'ati

Lecha na'eh leshabe'ach

Tikon beit tefilati

Vesham todah nezabe'ach

Le'et tachin matbe'ach

Mitzar hamnabe'ach

Az egmor beshir mizmor

Chanukat hamizbe'ach

Rock of Ages, let our song praise your saving power. You amidst the raging foes were our sheltering tower. Furious, they assailed us, but your armor veiled us. And your word broke their sword when our own strength failed us.
